In 1926, Max enlisted Francis Price, his attorney, and George MacLellan, manager of the Music Branch of the Community Arts Association, to help him inaugurate a civic band in Santa Barbara. His father had played in a town band in Riverside, Ohio, and the Major had fond memories of those outdoor concerts. He financed a surgical wing at Cottage Hospital and made many contributions to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, including the Library, Mammal Hall, Bird Hall, and Fleischmann Auditorium. The Morning Press applauded when the Major donated $500,000 to build the breakwater, paving the way for Santa Barbara’s long-desired harbor. He donated lights for the Peabody Stadium so the high school football team could play night games. Following the 1925 earthquake, he helped to restore the Santa Barbara Mission. When community needs arose, Max was quick to respond. He later said, “When I first beheld the beautiful Carpinteria Valley, I knew I had at last found the home base I had been searching for.” One day Max and his wife Sarah drove from Arcadia to Santa Barbara, a journey that rekindled his affection for the region. Army Balloon School in Arcadia, California. After recovering from an enemy gas attack, he was reassigned as commandant of the U.S. During World War I, he served in France as a major with the Signal Officers’ Reserve Corps, Balloon Division and became commandant of the Army Aeronautical School at Vadenay. In 1909, he made national headlines by winning a balloon race from St. Max’s many interests included aviation and ballooning. Max started in the family business at age 18 and worked his way up in the manufacturing department, eventually becoming chairman of the board. His father founded the Fleischmann Yeast Company, the first commercial yeast production firm in America. The wealthy 34-year old was an avid sportsman – a former top amateur boxer whose big-game safaris and fishing trips took him all over the world. That man was Major Maximilian Charles Fleischmann – industrialist, adventurer, and humanitarian – who adopted Santa Barbara as his home in the 1920s.Ī native of Riverside, Ohio, Max Fleischmann first came to Santa Barbara in 1911 for a polo tournament. The beginning of the Santa Barbara Foundation can be traced to one man’s passion for philanthropy and his wish to supply free band concerts for the general public. Here’s a great biography on Max Fleischmann from The Santa Barbara Foundation (which Max founded): Incidentally, Spillian Co-Founder Leigh Melander got her doctorate in the estate that Max built just south of Santa Barbara! Synchronicity…we didn’t know this until after we’d purchased the building… We’re guessing this is in Santa Barbara, where he moved. This is a picture of him from 1918, standing next to his seaplane. He was the first commandant of a hot air balloon battalion in World War I, and then quickly fell in love with places. Like his brothers, Max was an adventurer and explorer, who sailed yachts, rode and raced horses, and travelled widely. This Max stayed with either his parents or his brother, Julius right down the hill from the mansion stands, where the bonfire meadow and stone stage are now. This Max Fleischmann was the son of Charles Louis, and nephew of the Max that owned our house.

Netflix's My First First Love, premiering April 18, is the perfect way to shake off the winter blues and usher in the spring season. You’ll narrow down what you’re wearing-Darah and Siobhan are a great help with that, as they have experience knowing what sorts of things shoot well and look flattering and which ones you’ll wish you had maybe just skipped-you’ll strap on the most fabulous pair of shoes you own, you’ll flip your hair over once or twice, toss back the last of the champagne, and step onto set.Īnd here is perhaps where the biggest Oh, thank God crosses your mind, because here is where, before every single pose you do, whichever lady is shooting you at that moment literally shows you your pose by physically getting into it themselves, God bless them. Miss B Wilson from Just B Beautiful was there to do all of the above for us, and she was completely awesome. Somehow, although they were strangers just minutes ago, this quickly all seems totally normal.Īnd yes, an on-site professional makeup artist and lash application (because false eyelashes are non-negotiable in this situation, please) comes built into the price of the session, and hair is also available for an add-on if you aren’t confident in your ability to tousle your own bedroom curls. In no time, you will feel totally comfortable trying on both the nightie and bra-and-bikini set you brought and discussing the merits of each, and having Siobhan help you with those tricky back straps of a garter belt. The third thing I will tell you is that it is beyond important that you are completely at ease with whatever photographer is shooting this thing, or it’s just not going to work, and that the ladies at Dollface, Darah and Siobhan-they do both their wedding photography and boudoir photography together-feel like insta-girlfriends as soon as you sit down on their plush, pretty couch, pop the bubbly, and start gabbing. The second thing I will tell you is that yes, there is champagne. There’s not enough La Perla in the world to fix a face that says I’m naked and so freezing I could just about die, so it was on my mind. Not the first thing you were wondering, perhaps? Well, I tell you what-as a constantly freezing person, it is one of the main things I was wondering. 76 degrees! I looked at the thermostat while I was sitting in the makeup chair. The first thing I will tell you is that the studio is warm. Now, if you want to frequent some lovely Philly businesses such as, oh, I don’t know, say, Lithe Method, Pangaea Earth Foods, and Skin Palette before your shoot-though try not to have any tan lines Photoshop isn’t a miracle-worker, you know-however, you might find it’ll give you a little boost.) Seriously! This is not some front-on, in-broad-daylight Maxim shoot, and you shouldn’t think of it that way. (Oh, and perhaps a quick word on prep: No, this is not something you should, like, starve yourself for, or anything. Especially because after this, I honestly think every bride out there ought to at least consider trying this out. And since it is our journalistic duty as magazine editors to sometimes guinea-pig ourselves in strangely intimate ways and report back to you, our dear readers, on the grisly details, that is what I’m going to do. Go ahead and click the link, I’ll hang out right here.Īnd so we went. They’re Dollface Studio-they also do wedding photography, actually-and yes, they’ve got boudoir galleries up. There are a good many photographers in the Philadelphia area who are doing or who will do boudoir photography, but there’s one studio for whom it’s really their thing, and after recently relocating their studio, rebranding, and relaunching their website, they invited me and a few of my lovely female colleagues to come in and try it out ourselves, with a complimentary mini boudoir session each. It’s boudoir photography, the kind in which you-the bride, in this context-partake in a professional photo shoot in which you are in your pretty underthings, and then give the resulting pictures to your groom as a wedding present.īut I think I’ve figured out now why I couldn’t decide how I felt about it before-and how I feel about it now. And also gross.īut there’s one that’s been consistently on the rise for quite some time, now, and I couldn’t ever really pinpoint how I felt about it. Morning-after photography, for instance-where your photog shows back up the morning after your wedding to ostensibly photograph you and your groom in the throes of brushed-teeth and posed (read: fake) morning-after passion? It can be argued that special relativity eliminates the concept of absolute simultaneity and a universal present: according to the relativity of simultaneity, observers in different frames of reference can have different measurements of whether a given pair of events happened at the same time or at different times, with there being no physical basis for preferring one frame's judgments over another's. Both ends of the bar pass through the ring simultaneously in the rest frame of the ring (left), but the ends of the bar pass one after the other in the rest frame of the bar (right). The bar and ring paradox is an example of the relativity of simultaneity. This conventional model presents a number of difficult philosophical problems and may be difficult to reconcile with currently accepted scientific theories such as the theory of relativity. The past and future do not exist and are only concepts used to describe the real, isolated, and changing present. The present does not travel forward through an environment of time, moving from a real point in the past and toward a real point in the future. One view of this type, presentism, argues that only the present exists. In this way time is said to pass, with a distinct present moment moving forward into the future and leaving the past behind. As time passes, the moment that was once the present becomes part of the past, and part of the future, in turn, becomes the new present. Using that representational model, the past is generally seen as being immutably fixed, and the future as at least partly undefined. In classical philosophy, time is divided into three distinct regions: the " past", the " present", and the " future". It is sometimes referred to as the " block time" or " block universe" theory due to its description of space-time as an unchanging four-dimensional "block", as opposed to the view of the world as a three-dimensional space modulated by the passage of time. Some forms of eternalism give time a similar ontology to that of space, as a dimension, with different times being as real as different places, and future events are "already there" in the same sense other places are already there, and that there is no objective flow of time. In the philosophy of space and time, eternalism is an approach to the ontological nature of time, which takes the view that all existence in time is equally real, as opposed to presentism or the growing block universe theory of time, in which at least the future is not the same as any other time. According to eternalism, those four instants all equally exist. In a common sense view of time, each of those four instants would exist one after another. Time progresses through the series of snapshots from the bottom of the page to the top. Philosophical view that there is no correct way of perceiving the passage of time Illustration of the concept of eternalism, showing a man walking his dog. This is a pointillism artwork, Seurat applied thousands upon thousands of small dots of paint to create colour transitions in the artwork. Georges Seurat: A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande JatteĪn example of large scale art is Georges Seurat’s ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte’. Monumental sculptures, large canvases and interactive installations are all examples of large scale art. This type of artwork allows for greater detail and it can be used to make a powerful statement or to evoke strong emotions. Large scale art is an artwork that has been created to a larger than life size. By using these proportions in a drawing, the artist creates an appearance of accurate scale. For example an artist can infer that one building is roughly double the size compared to another. Whereas proportion only requires the ratios of the relative sizes to be known.īy using proportion in an artwork, artists can create the impression of accurate scales, even if the original measurements of the objects in life are not known. So the width of an eye compared to the width of a face has the ratio 1:5.īoth these principles in art include comparing the size of one object to another, however, scale requires the measurements to be known. The face (whole) is, on average, five eyes (parts) wide. The scale of the sculpture is large, but it is in proportion, because the features accurately represent the proportions of human features.Īn example of proportion in art is in this image of the measurements of a face by da Vinci. This means that the statue of David was scaled up to be three times the size of the reference figure. So the statue is exactly three times the height of an average man. To give an example of scale, Michelangelo’s David is 17ft in size. While scale is an exact measurement of an object, relative to another object. Proportion is the ratio of one part in relation to another part, relative to a whole. However, to know the scale of objects within an image and how their sizes relate to one another, you will need to know the true measurements of the object in real life settings to compare it. It also relates to how particular figures or objects can appear realistic or ‘to scale’ when compared with the figures or objects in life that they are representing. Scale in art refers to the size or dimensions of an artwork compared to its surroundings. When you have the set of columns that you consider will work best for you then you can download a report of this view to be able to work it on Excel. I for example always use the following set of columns: In order to efficiently use this you need to make sure you have the right set of columns in your AdWords interface in the Keywords tab. Analyzing the Information in Your Keywords Feel free to check the other options to see if perhaps there are elements that you may consider more relevant to your goals with AdWords. You can actually do this same analysis with pretty much all the options available in the segments, but those 2 I mention are the main ones I use. To do this you first drag the Device element and then the Ad group, add the metrics that you deem important for your campaign as values, change any value settings depending on how you want to see them and you will be able to have a well distributed amount of information that will show you how your ad groups are performing depending on the device that is being used to search for your keywords. Same deal as the one mentioned above, segment your ad groups, download the report, delete your totals, and insert a pivot table based on this information. The values will be added as a sum of them and in numerical format as a default, you can change this by clicking on the arrow showing on the value name and then clicking on “Value Field Settings”, here you can change your CTR (or any other metric that normally represents a percentage) to reflect averages and to show as percentages.īy doing all of this you will be analyze your ad groups very granularly by how their performance is based on the time of the day. You first drag the Hour of day element to the Row Labels and then the Ad group element, afterwards you can add any metric that you deem important to the Values (for example you can add Clicks, CTR, Conversions, etc.). This will create the pivot table on a separate sheet by default, you know need to select the proper elements in it. Now what you need to do is select all the data starting from the headers and create a pivot table with it. But the way I use it is combined with the segments option.īy combining the segment’s feature and Excel you can easily see a lot of data at once the main segments I check are: Time » Hour of Day:Īfter you have segmented the Ad Groups, download your report, and then delete the totals as I recommended earlier. This will be like the basic takeaway that you can get out of Excel to be able to see the metrics for your ad groups better. You can do this by clicking on the arrow corresponding to the particular element that you want to interact with (for example that you don’t want to see data for a particular ad group, you can click on the arrow that is on Ad group and then from the list that drops down simply take out the check mark of any ad group that don’t want to see).Īlso if you click on the arrow of any of the metrics you can sort the data from largest to smallest or from smallest to largest depending on what you want to see specifically. What this filter will do to help you is that it will allow you to sort, take away certain items or select only some specific ones. There are many ways to put a filter, but the way I do it is that I select the row where my headers are and then type CTRL+Shift+L.Īfter doing this the headers should look like this: The first step I will advise you to take in this file is to delete any rows that have totals as they may skew your data when you are sorting it or filtering it, second will be to give all the headers a filter. You will need to access your AdWords account and then in your campaign select the Ad Groups tab, now you will need to download a report of this view and then open it using Excel.Īfter you do this you will only need to open the file that was downloaded with Excel. I will divide my tips into checking three aspects of one campaign:Īnalyzing the Information in your Ad Groups Similar to Editor, you can do most of the stuff you can do in Excel by using the AdWords interface, but still I have found a couple of ways to make your job easier and faster with Excel whenever you are optimizing. I will give some quick and easy pointers on how can you manage more data and analyze your campaigns better by simply using Excel. This time however I will concentrate on easy implementations for you to analyze information prior to your optimizations. This time around I will be giving you more tips on how to use Excel for AdWords. Recently, I posted an article about how to do some simple use of Excel to help you create and post your campaign faster on AdWords.
